REMEMBERING OUR DOUGHBOYS

Thursday, November 8

This November 11th will be the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Great War, also known as World War I. Close to 5 million Americans served in our armed forces during the war, with about 2 million of them sent to France to fight. They became known as the “doughboys.” Come hear stories of some who came home and some who did not. We will also look at the stories of Gold Star Mothers who traveled to France to visit their son’s grave. Relatives of two Chateau residents will be spotlighted as well as memorabilia on display from the Great War.

The damage to his brain stem resulted in what’s called locked-in syndrome, with which he is almost completely paralyzed and only able to communicate by blinking an eye. Bauby begins to painstakingly interact again with the world around him, and astonishingly dic-tates his memoir via the only means of expression left to him.
